Type ZB Compression-Lock Telescopic Transmission Line Earthing Rod

HASEGAWA Type ZB is a compression-lock telescopic earthing rod for power transmission lines and the B version of the Type Z family. Line maintenance crews use it to attach earthing leads to the conductors of a line taken out for maintenance, from the ground or the tower, at a safe distance.

It works in the same way as the Type Z: the telescopic sections are compressed to lock at the required length. Because HASEGAWA's published table only lists values for types Z1–Z3, the voltage class, head fitting and lengths of the ZB are confirmed with the manufacturer and provided with the quotation. It is supplied as a genuine HASEGAWA product by HASEGAWA Türkiye, the official distributor in Türkiye.

Where is it used?

• Earthing both ends of a transmission line de-energised for planned maintenance
• Protecting the work area before repairing insulators, clamps and conductors on towers
• Temporary earthing against voltage induced from adjacent live lines
• Shared training and procedures with the Type Z for crews used to compression locking

Type ZB or Type Z?

The four models in the family differ by locking method and verified values as follows:

Feature	Type Z	Type ZB	Type Y	Type YB
Locking	Compression	Compression	Push-button	Push-button
Voltage classes	77 / 154 / 275 kV	To be confirmed	77 / 154 kV	77 / 154 kV
Metal head fitting	MA121-A	To be confirmed	MA121-A	MA121-B
Longest extended length	4.0 m (Z1)	To be confirmed	2.5 m (Y2)	2.4 m (YB2)
Weight incl. case	8.8 – 15.5 kg	To be confirmed	9.0 – 11.5 kg	8.1 – 9.6 kg

The only verified option for 275 kV lines is Z1. In the push-button family the B version (YB) uses a different head fitting and is lighter than the Y; we clarify before ordering whether a similar difference applies to the ZB. For details, see the Type Y and Type YB pages.

Technical specifications

• Type: compression-lock telescopic transmission line earthing rod
• Family: same locking design as Type Z (Z1 275 kV, Z2 154 kV, Z3 77 kV)
• Earthing lead: 22 mm² cross-section in the Type Z family
• Voltage class, head fitting, length and weight: confirmed at quotation stage
• Country of origin: Japan

Limits of use and safety

The rod may only be applied to a line that has been de-energised and verified as dead with a hot stick high-voltage detector of the appropriate class. The earth connection is made first, then the phase conductor; on removal, the earth is disconnected last. Check the compression lock by hand after every extension, and wear insulating gloves and a safety helmet. The basic rules are set out in our article Earthing Sets: Safe Working.
