Genuine HASEGAWA for Europe — Commercial invoice for every order · Shipping across Europe
Electrical safety equipment is bought against standards. This page summarises the European and international standards that apply to the equipment we supply, so that you can specify what your procedures require. It is a guide, not a statement that every model complies with every standard listed.
For each model you are interested in, we can tell you which standard(s) it was designed and tested to and which documentation the manufacturer provides for it. Ask for this in your quotation request. If your company or network operator requires a specific standard, tell us at the start so that we recommend a model that meets it.
EN 50110-1 (Operation of electrical installations) sets the European minimum requirements for working on, with or near electrical installations. Its five safety rules for work on de-energised installations are:
Rule 3 calls for a voltage detector, rule 4 for earthing and short-circuiting equipment. National versions exist in each country, such as DIN VDE 0105-100 in Germany. Read more in our guides The Five Safety Rules and Electrical Safety at Work in Europe.
| Part | Covers | Related products |
|---|---|---|
| IEC 61243-1 (EN IEC 61243-1) | Capacitive voltage detectors for AC systems above 1 kV | Universal-joint and hot-stick high-voltage detectors |
| IEC 61243-2 | Resistive voltage detectors for AC and DC systems above 1 kV | High-voltage and railway detectors of the resistive type |
| IEC 61243-3 | Two-pole voltage detectors for low-voltage systems | Low-voltage test equipment |
| IEC 61243-5 | Voltage detecting systems (VDS) installed in switchgear | Fixed indicators in switchgear panels |
Several HASEGAWA high-voltage detectors are designed to IEC 61243-1, including the HWB and HWA series. Our article What Is IEC 61243-1? explains the standard in detail.
IEC 61481 covers portable phase comparators used to check that two live parts are in phase before they are connected, for AC systems above 1 kV. It is relevant to our medium and high-voltage phase testers.
IEC 61230 (EN 61230) specifies portable equipment for earthing or earthing and short-circuiting: clamps, cables and connectors, and their short-circuit ratings. It is relevant to our cubicle earthing sets, transmission line earthing sets and custom earthing equipment. When ordering, state the fault current and duration the set must withstand.
Insulating poles used with detectors, earthing sets, discharge sticks and operating rods fall under the live-working standards for insulating tools, such as IEC 60855 (foam-filled tubes and solid rods) and IEC 61235 (hollow tubes). The working length must keep the user at the minimum approach distance your procedures require.
IEC 61010-1 sets the general safety requirements for electrical measuring equipment, including measurement categories (CAT II, CAT III, CAT IV). Our HTE-610W low-voltage detector, for example, refers to IEC 61010-1.
Personal proximity (approach) alarms warn the wearer when they come close to live equipment. They are an additional safeguard and do not replace a voltage detector or the five safety rules. See What Is a Proximity Alarm?.
Which of these applies to a particular product depends on the product and how it is used. If you need a specific document for your tender or incoming inspection, tell us in your quotation request.
