Type Z Compression-Lock Telescopic Transmission Line Earthing Rod

HASEGAWA Type Z is a compression-lock telescopic earthing rod for power transmission lines. It is used by transmission line crews and substation maintenance personnel to attach earthing leads to the conductors of a line de-energised for maintenance, from a safe distance. The series comprises three types: Z1 for 275 kV, Z2 for 154 kV and Z3 for 77 kV.

The telescopic sections are fixed at the required length by compression. The largest type, Z1, extends to 4.0 m and retracts to 1.8 m for transport. Made in Japan, the rods are supplied as genuine HASEGAWA products by HASEGAWA Türkiye, the official distributor in Türkiye, together with advice on the right type for your line voltage.

Where is it used?

• 275 kV transmission lines: with a 5 m, 22 mm² earthing lead and 4.0 m extended length, Z1 has the longest reach in the series; its carrying case holds a 1-phase set.
• 154 kV lines and switchyards: Z2, with 2.6 m extended length and a 4 m lead, is used for conductor connection at this voltage level.
• 77 kV lines: with 1.5 m extended length and 1.1 m transport length, Z3 is the most compact and lightest (8.8 kg) type in the series.
• Planned maintenance and fault repair: for insulator replacement, conductor repair or work on towers, the line is earthed on both sides to protect the work area.

Type Z or Type Y?

Transmission line earthing rods fall into two groups by locking method: compression-lock (Type Z / ZB) and push-button (Type Y / YB). Types of the same voltage class are compared below:

Only Type Z (Z1) is available in the 275 kV class. At 154 kV, Z2 gives the longest extended length; at 77 kV the push-button types stand out with a shorter transport length. For the ZB type we confirm the values at quotation stage.

Limits of use and safety

Type Z must only be used in the type that matches the line voltage; a Z2 designed for 154 kV must not be used on a 275 kV line. Before the rod is applied, the line must be verified as dead with a hot stick high-voltage detector of the appropriate voltage class. Connect earth first, then the phase; remove in the reverse order.

Check that the compression lock is fully seated after every extension, and do not use the set if the lead or head fitting is crushed or has broken strands. Use PPE such as insulating gloves, a safety helmet and a face shield, and observe the minimum approach distances required by applicable regulations and your company safety rules.
