HRD-27 Discharge Stick with Built-in Resistor

HASEGAWA HRD-27 is a discharge stick with a built-in resistor, used to drain the charge remaining in de-energised cables, capacitors and test set-ups. It is rated for a maximum discharge voltage of DC 27 kV, and its 600 kΩ built-in resistor transfers the charge to earth in a controlled way rather than as a sudden discharge.

How does a resistive discharge stick work?

A cable that has undergone a DC withstand test, or a capacitor disconnected from its circuit, can still carry a dangerous voltage after the supply has been removed. When the tip of the HRD-27 touches this point, the charge flows to earth through the 600 kΩ resistor. The resistor limits the discharge current, preventing a heavy arc and a sudden current surge.

According to manufacturer data, the HRD-27 brings a charge of up to 1 µF from DC 27 kV down to 50 V or below in 5 seconds or less. This defined time gives the operator a clear reference for how long to wait for discharge. Typical applications:

Limits of use and safety

The HRD-27 is used only on de-energised circuits. After the circuit has been opened and isolated, absence of voltage must be checked with a suitable voltage detector before discharging. In applications where the DC 27 kV and 1 µF limits would be exceeded, for example large capacitor banks, the expected discharge time may be longer, so model selection should be assessed in advance.

After discharge is complete, the circuit must be earthed with an earthing set for the duration of the work; a discharge stick does not replace earthing. Use insulating gloves and hold the stick only by its grip area. You will find the basics in our article What Is a Discharge Stick?.
