Custom Simple Discharge Stick

The HASEGAWA made-to-order simple discharge stick is a discharge stick without a built-in resistor, used in AC 6.6 kV distribution systems to transfer the residual charge in de-energised equipment to earth. Stick length, earthing lead cross-section and length, and the earth clamp are selected to suit the user's site and the stick is built to that specification.

It suits the electrical teams of industrial sites and distribution maintenance crews working with medium-voltage cubicles, cable terminations and capacitors. Where is it used?

In 6.6 kV systems, the charge remaining in cables and capacitors after the circuit breaker has been opened can be a hazard for the maintenance team. The simple discharge stick drains this charge directly through the earthing lead. With no resistor in its construction, it is simple and robust. Typical applications:

• Discharging busbars and cable terminations in medium-voltage cubicles before maintenance
• Discharging capacitors in power factor correction panels
• An intermediate safety step after isolation of motor and transformer connections

Four selections are made when ordering: insulating stick length (0.5 m, 1.0 m, 1.5 m or 2.0 m), earthing lead cross-section (8 mm² or 14 mm²), lead length (from 2 m to 10 m, in one-metre steps) and earth clamp (crocodile clip or SA107-B vice type).

If you need a simple stick with dimensions set for your site, choose the simple discharge stick; if you need controlled discharge at high DC test voltages, the HRD-27 is more suitable.

Limits of use and safety

The stick is only used on a circuit that has been de-energised and verified dead with a voltage detector. First connect the earth clamp to the earthing point, then touch the tip to the point to be discharged. Do not use it on systems above AC 6.6 kV.

Because there is no resistor, a brief arc may occur at the moment of discharge, so insulating gloves and a face shield must be worn.
