Type Y Push-Button Telescopic Earthing Rod

HASEGAWA Type Y is a push-button telescopic earthing rod for 77 kV and 154 kV transmission lines. The telescopic sections lock with a push button, so line crews can quickly extend and retract the rod on a tower or in a switchyard. The series comprises two types: Y2 for 154 kV and Y3 for 77 kV.

Both types have an MA121-A metal head fitting and a 22 mm² earthing lead. The Y3 retracts to 0.9 m, making it easy to carry in vehicles and confined spaces. The product is made in Japan and supplied as a genuine HASEGAWA product by HASEGAWA Türkiye, the official distributor in Türkiye.

How does a push-button telescopic rod work?

The rod is carried retracted in its case. Before use, the sections are pulled out and each is locked with its push button; the extended length is 2.5 m for the Y2 and 1.5 m for the Y3. The earthing lead is connected to the earthing point first, then the MA121-A fitting at the tip of the rod is attached to the phase conductor. When work is finished the sequence is reversed and the sections are retracted by pressing the buttons.

The push-button design locks the sections without the need for compression. When choosing between the compression-lock Type Z and the Type Y, the deciding factors are usually the locking method the crew is used to and the length required.

Type Y or Type YB?

The Y and YB share the same push-button design and voltage classes; they differ in head fitting, extended length and weight. The compression-lock Type Z is also included in the table for comparison:

The Type Y uses the same head fitting as the Type Z (MA121-A) but locks with push buttons. If your crew's existing head fittings are MA121-B, consider the YB; for a 275 kV line, consider the Z1.

Limits of use and safety

The highest voltage class of the Type Y is 154 kV; it must not be used on higher-voltage lines. Before application, check that the line is dead with a hot stick high-voltage detector of the appropriate class, and make sure the rod is held only by its insulated grip area. Confirm before use that every button is fully engaged in its locking hole, and never work with a damaged lead or fitting.
