HST-W80L Hot Stick High Voltage Detector

HASEGAWA HST-W80L is a hot stick high voltage detector built for the AC 20 kV – 80.5 kV range, covering 33 kV-class distribution and 66 kV-class networks. Within the L series it has the highest starting voltage (5000 V ± 1000 V). It is manufactured in Japan by Hasegawa Electric and supplied by HASEGAWA Türkiye, the official HASEGAWA distributor in Türkiye, to customers across Europe.

A high starting threshold means the instrument only gives an indication above a certain voltage. Where several circuits share the same tower or the same switchyard, such a threshold generally reduces the likelihood that low-level voltages caused by capacitive coupling or induction produce a misleading result. Users include distribution network operators, operators of 66 kV installations and maintenance teams at renewable energy plants.

Where is it used?

• Double-circuit overhead lines: checking the de-energised circuit when one circuit on the same tower remains live while the other is being maintained.
• 66 kV switchyards: verification before earthing in busbar arrangements with parallel feeders side by side.
• Wind and solar collector circuits: confirming the isolated circuit on 30 kV or 33 kV collector lines sharing the same route.
• Congested primary substations: routine operational checks in substations with medium and high voltage busbars close together.

As the table shows, the starting threshold is the only technical value that separates the two models. If your network often has parallel circuits that stay live, the HST-W80L stands out; if you prefer to work with a lower threshold, the HST-70L is the better fit. If you work mainly at 33 kV and below, the HST-30L is a more suitable starting point.

Limits of use and safety

A high threshold is a limitation as much as an advantage: below 5000 V ± 1000 V the instrument may not give an indication. For this reason, use the HST-W80L only on lines in the 20 kV – 80.5 kV range and not on lower medium voltage levels. Since a missing indication can also be caused by a flat battery, test the instrument with a voltage detector tester before every measurement. Wear gloves and face protection rated for the voltage class, do not grip the stick beyond the handle limit and observe the approach distances.
