HSR-500 Hot Stick High Voltage Detector

HASEGAWA HSR-500 is a hot stick high voltage detector operating in the AC 250 kV – 550 kV range and designed for the highest transmission voltages. The 380 kV and 400 kV transmission networks used across Europe sit in the middle of this range. Manufactured in Japan by Hasegawa Electric, it is supplied by HASEGAWA Türkiye, the official HASEGAWA distributor in Türkiye, to customers across Europe.

The HSR-500's starting threshold is AC 20 kV ± 20% to earth: the instrument gives an indication when it touches the exposed live part and sees a voltage above this level. This high threshold helps reduce the risk of misleading results caused by voltages induced from neighbouring feeders in EHV switchyards. Its main users are transmission substation teams, line maintenance contractors working at 400 kV and switchyard staff at large power plants.

Where is it used?

• 400 kV substations: final check on autotransformer connections, main busbars and line feeders before the earthing switches are closed.
• 400 kV transmission lines: confirming the absence of voltage at line ends and gantry connections during planned outages.
• Large power plants: maintenance preparation in the EHV switchyards of thermal, hydroelectric and gas-fired plants.
• 500 kV projects: transmission projects in countries where 500 kV systems are used.

Limits of use and safety

The HSR-500 is not used in installations below 250 kV; for 110 kV – 150 kV choose the HST-170, and for 220 kV the HST-250. Below the 20 kV threshold no indication is given, so a "no voltage" result does not mean the line can be touched without earthing. Approach distances at 400 kV are very large; grip the stick only in the handle area and never test with a damp or dirty surface. Before testing, confirm that the instrument works with a suitable voltage detector tester and check the AAA batteries. Do not use the instrument outside −10 °C … +40 °C. After verification, earth the line with transmission line earthing sets.
