HXA-6S Helmet-Mounted Proximity Alarm

HASEGAWA HXA-6S is a helmet-mounted hot-line proximity alarm for 6.6 kV – 33 kV medium-voltage overhead lines. Fixed to the safety helmet, the device detects when the head comes dangerously close to a live conductor and gives an audible warning of at least 65 dB at 1 m. It is designed for distribution network crews working at pole top.

Under standard conditions, the alarm starts at approximately 110 cm from the conductor. This means an earlier warning than the arm-mounted model in the same voltage class. The HXA-6S is manufactured in Japan by HASEGAWA Electric and supplied as a genuine HASEGAWA product by HASEGAWA Türkiye, the official distributor in Türkiye.

How does a helmet-mounted proximity alarm work?

An energised overhead line conductor creates an alternating electric field around it. The HXA-6S continuously measures the strength of this field; as the helmet approaches the conductor the field becomes stronger, and once the threshold is exceeded the audible alarm sounds. In pole-top work, head and shoulder height is one of the points that most often comes close to the conductor, so the helmet is a natural position for the alarm. With the sound source close to the ear, the warning is easy to notice even in noisy surroundings.

All three helmet-mounted models share the same body dimensions and accessory set. If your network does not exceed 33 kV, the HXA-6S is sufficient; for higher distribution voltages such as 34.5 kV choose the HXA-30S, and for 66 kV – 110 kV lines the HXA-70S. For those who prefer to wear the alarm on the arm, the HXA-6 covers the same voltage range; for work inside panels and switchgear, the wrist-worn HXW-6WL is more practical.

Real alarm distance varies with conductor arrangement, surrounding structures, earthing conditions and the work environment; verify operation on site. The HXA Series is an auxiliary warning device and does not replace required safety clearances or verification of absence of voltage.

Limits of use and safety

The HXA-6S gives a proximity warning; it does not measure voltage. Before work starts, verify that the line is de-energised with a suitable voltage detector and earth the line. A silent alarm does not prove that the conductor is dead or that you are at a safe distance; the minimum approach distance must be maintained in all circumstances.
