Disconnector Operating Rods

A disconnector operating rod is an insulated hand tool that allows disconnectors to be opened and closed while the operator remains at a safe distance. It is used by operating staff in substations, distribution installations and MV consumer installations, both for planned switching and for isolation after faults.

There are three products in this subcategory, and the choice depends largely on two criteria: the voltage level at which the switching is performed and whether the disconnector is outdoors or inside a cubicle.

The HSH-K6 combines an operating rod and a voltage detector in one tool; by reducing the need to carry a separate detector, it contributes to safety and efficiency. The SA109 series, with its wide voltage range, is used from distribution level up to 110 kV. The D Series is designed for working in the confined spaces inside cubicles.

Points to note in use

• An operating rod must be used only within its defined voltage range; the rod surface must be clean, dry and free of cracks.
• After the disconnector has been opened, the absence of voltage must be verified at the work location and the line earthed; an operating rod does not replace earthing equipment.
• The operator must wear insulating gloves and a face shield suited to the voltage class and hold the rod by its grip area.

Which rod is suitable for 33–36 kV disconnectors?

33–36 kV lies within the AC 10 kV – 110 kV range of the SA109 series. The D Series is limited to 30 kV and the HSH-K6 to 6.6 kV, so they are not suitable at this level.

Does the detector in the HSH-K6 replace a separate voltage detector?

The HSH-K6 is specified for AC 6.6 kV. If you work at other voltage levels, you need a voltage detector suited to that level.
