HWB-35 Universal Joint High Voltage Detector

HASEGAWA HWB-35 is a universal joint medium voltage detector built for the AC 6 kV – 35 kV range. As the lowest voltage-class model in the HWB series, it covers in a single range the 20 kV and 33 kV levels that make up much of Europe's medium voltage distribution, as well as 6 kV, 10 kV, 11 kV and 15 kV networks and industrial MV supplies.

It suits DSO fault and maintenance crews, those responsible for substations at industrial sites and technicians working on 30 kV or 33 kV collector circuits at wind and solar farms. Manufactured in Japan by Hasegawa Electric, the HWB-35 is supplied by HASEGAWA Türkiye, the official HASEGAWA distributor in Türkiye, to customers across Europe.

Where is it used?

• 20 kV and 33 kV overhead lines: verifying absence of voltage by approaching the conductors on the pole after an outage.
• Distribution substations and kiosk-type transformers: checks before earthing on cubicle busbars, cable terminations and disconnector outlets.
• Industrial sites: pre-maintenance verification on medium voltage consumers such as 6 kV or 10 kV motor feeder cubicles.
• Renewable energy sites: on internal collector circuits of wind and solar farms and on inverter transformer connections.

According to the spec table, the detector responds when brought within 5 – 10 cm of the conductor at AC 6 kV. When detection starts, an intermittent sound of 80 dB or more and a flashing red LED, distinguishable even at 50,000 lux, activate together.

If you work only on the distribution network, the HWB-35 is the most accurate choice. Those who prefer a different design in the same range can look at the HST-35V, and for 11 kV – 33 kV at the HWA-33X.

Limits of use and safety

The HWB-35 is a separate-type detector; bring it towards the conductor only when mounted on an insulating stick rated for the voltage class. Do not use it in installations above 35 kV, and do not expect a reliable indication at voltages below 6 kV. Before every check, confirm that the instrument works on a known live source or with a suitable voltage detector tester; if the green standby LED does not light, the batteries may need checking. Wear gloves and personal protective equipment rated for the MV class during testing and observe approach distances.
