HASEGAWA HLA-1A is a compact voltage detector tester used to confirm in the field that a voltage detector is working. It has two separate output terminals: the H terminal delivers an AC 400 V test voltage and the L terminal AC 100 V. If the detector gives its warning when brought close to the relevant terminal, it is ready for use.
Weighing approximately 430 g and measuring 65 × 120 × 40 mm, it is the smallest and lightest model in the HLA series and fits easily in a tool bag or a vehicle compartment. The HLA-1A runs on four LR03 (AAA) batteries, is made in Japan and is supplied as a genuine HASEGAWA product by the official distributor in Türkiye, with a commercial invoice.
When a voltage detector stays silent there are two possibilities: the circuit is dead, or the detector is not working. The HLA-1A lets you rule out the second possibility in seconds, on site:
The two output levels let you see how a low-threshold detector responds at both the lower and the upper end of its range. The 55 Hz ± 10 Hz output frequency provides a test signal suited to the sensing circuit of mains-frequency detectors.

The deciding factor is the starting (threshold) voltage of the detector to be tested. The HLA-1A is sufficient for low-voltage and low-threshold detectors. For higher-threshold detectors use the HLA-2G with 1200 V output, and for medium- and high-voltage detectors that need a 4000 V test, the HLA-3. DC detectors have their own model, the HLA-N2 DC.
The HLA-1A only shows whether the detector responds; it does not prove that a circuit is dead. The correct sequence is to test the detector on the HLA-1A first, then check the circuit for voltage, and test the detector again when the job is finished. Although the short-circuit current is limited to 0.5 mA or less, do not touch the terminals with bare hands; hold the detector by its own handle.
As the total operating time is approximately 1 hour, do not leave the unit switched on unnecessarily, and keep spare LR03 batteries to hand. For compatible detectors see the low-voltage detectors category; for why test frequency matters, read our article on periodic inspection.
Frequently Asked Questions
The H terminal produces an AC 400 V test voltage and the L terminal AC 100 V. You choose the terminal that suits your detector's operating threshold and check whether it gives a warning.
The unit uses four LR03 (1.5 V) batteries. With new batteries the total operating time is approximately 1 hour.
The manufacturer specifies an operating range of −10 °C … +50 °C. The unit should not be used at temperatures below this limit.
