Why Regular Checks of Voltage Detectors Matter

A faulty voltage detector can show a live line as dead. We explain why a pre-use check and regular testing are essential.
A voltage detector is the piece of equipment an electrician trusts with their life. Yet a weak battery, an impact or moisture can make a detector show a live line as dead. That is why it must be checked before every use and at regular intervals.
Pre-use check
- Use the detector's built-in test button to check the light and sound indication.
- Where possible, test it on a known live source.
- If there is no live source on site, use a voltage detector tester.
Voltage detector testers
HASEGAWA HLA series testers simulate the detector's sensing circuit on site, so you can verify it in seconds. They are compact and portable enough to keep in every crew vehicle.
Maintenance tips
- Check the batteries regularly and remove them if the detector will not be used for a long time.
- Inspect insulating sticks for cracks, dirt and moisture.
- Store the equipment in its original case in a dry place.
